MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Olympic Training Center, Chula Vista
October 20, 1999

  1. President Ken Bernard called the meeting to order at 7:25 p.m. In addition to the President and Secretary, the attendees were Nelson Alexander, Lolitia Bache, Curt Clausen, Brian Culley, Dixon Farmer, Paul Greer, Sonja Hill, Allan Hodgert, Willie Morris, Ed Oleata, Patty Oleata, David Pain, Arnie Robinson, Steve Scott, Joni Shirley, Jerry Swartz, Elizabeth Tate, and Pat Thiss.
  2. The Board approved the minutes of the meeting of August 18.
  3. The President gave the Treasurer's report. The checking account balance was $10,510.45 as of September 10 while the certificates of deposit were another $16,000.
  4. At the last meeting, Arnie Robinson and Dixon Farmer were charged with helping revitalize the track & field program by getting more people involved. As a result, the Board unanimously approved the following Presidential appointments.

  5. Farmer listed the following meets to be held at the Olympic Training Center in 2000: the National JC Championships, one of the USA Track Coaches series, the Association Championships, and the August 12 pre-Olympic meet. The Association Championships will conclude a Southern California grand prix series of six meets, four in Los Angeles, one in early June at CS San Marcos.
  6. Oleata reported on the Western Regional Masters Track & Field Championships, which drew over 300 athletes to a one-day meet. Robinson reported that the youth regionals drew 1400 for a three-day meet.
  7. Tate initiated a discussion of the Association website. George Green has offered free hosting. She also reported that a grant is available for conducting a clinic and recruiting more women officials. Further, she announced that the youth track & field meet schedule is set, with meets from April 2 through May.
  8. The President appointed a committee to investigate setting up a website: G. Shirley (chair), Bache, and Tate.
  9. A discussion of delegates to the convention established priority for officers and chairmen. The President appointed a committee to select delegates: Bache, Robinson & G. Shirley.
  10. In a written ballot, the Board approved 17-3 Greer's motion that the November 6 cross country race at Morley Field directed by Manny Bautista be the Association Championship.
  11. The Board unanimously approved Oleata's motion for the Association to award a total of $900 to each sex for the Cross Country Championships.
  12. The Board unanimously approved Scott's motion for the Association to award a total of $900 to each sex for masters in the Cross Country Championships.
  13. Robinson is conducting the Youth Cross Country Championships November 14 in Vista.
  14. Culley announced that he will be conducting a series of track races in 2000, at which he will require USATF registration.
  15. The Board approved Oleata's motion that the Association endorse his bid to host the 2002 National Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
  16. The meeting adjourned at 10:48 p.m.
