MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

2820 Camino del Rio South 130
January 21, 2004

  1. President Graeme Shirley called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. In addition to the President and Secretary, the attendees were Lolitia Bache, Curt Clausen, Paul Greer, Lillian Mahoney, George Mathews, Tom Meyer, Jennifer Nanista, Sharon Powell, Arnie Robinson, Rahn Sheffield, Tracy Sundlun, Elizabeth Tate, Wes Williams, and Chuck Woolsey.
  2. The Board approved the minutes of the meeting of December 17.
  3. Treasurer Lolitia Bache reported that the checking account balance was $8177.13 as of the January statement, while the certificates of deposit were another $16,000.
  4. Sheffield reported that the Association Track & Field Championships will be June 19. The site will be either San Diego State or UC San Diego, depending on availability.
  5. Williams announced that there will be an all-comers meet February 7 at Escondido High School.
  6. Greer distributed flyers for the Spring Road Race Challenge Series. Similar to the Dirt Dogs Series, runners must compete in three of the first five races plus the final race, the Union-Tribune Race for Literacy 8K. He also named two races, the Union-Tribune Race for Literacy 8K and the Bonita Road Runners 5K as Association Championships. He further announced that Ted Van Arsdale has offered the UCSD course for the Association Cross Country Championships, the Dirt Dogs Series finalé.
  7. Clausen reported on the 30K Race Walk National Championships. Kevin Eastler and Michelle Rohl won, and behind him three American Masters Records were set: two by the father-son team of Mark (M45) and Max Green (M70), and one by Nick Bdera (M55). Joanne Dow used the opportunity to make the Olympic A Standard for the 20K distance.
  8. Mathews reported that the date for the Association Masters Track & Field Championships, the Chuck McMahon Meet, would be June 26. There still has been no decision on the Regional Championships. The Team Thor Throws Series continues January 24. Mathews noted Boldi Kocsor's high school marks in the shot (67' 8˝") and hammer (199' 9"), which are among the best in the nation. The final throws meet May 1 may incorporate a high school meet, and be considerably larger than the other meets.
  9. The Board discussed the recent awards dinner. The date and site of the 2005 event need to be set soon. The 2004 dinner drew 124, a considerable improvement over previous years, but 93 were complimentary. The policy on guests needs to be evaluated.
  10. Robinson proposed that the method the Association uses to hold elections should be changed to give Clubs more weight. Four methods of conducting elections are approved by USATF. Robinson will return with a specific proposal, which can be considered by the Board and presented to the members as a Bylaws change at the 2004 Annual Meeting.
  11. Sundlun reviewed the preparations for the 50 km Race Walk Olympic Team Selection, to be conducted February 15 in Chula Vista. The Opening Ceremony will be 4:45 p.m. February 13 at the Olympic Training Center. The event will include an adopt-a-walker program with school participation. The Awards Ceremony will be at the San Diego Country Club on the evening of the race.
  12. The meeting adjourned at 8:59 p.m.

    Joni Shirley
    Secretary
